Well, here we are again. Tons of work to do and a Saturday night Phish show to listen to. WTF? Who’s idea was this blog? It’s like torture. Can’t this wait til I’m old?

Magilla opener is very nice! Wilson is tighter than the last one. We’re on a countdown to the first crowd Wilson chant. It’s not too far off, right?

Just the 3rd Julius here and it is an absolute scorcher!! Hell yeah!

Then, I must admit, work got the better of me. I have been “listening” today, but a lot is slipping past me. The Reba Sucked me in, though. Trey’s tone is so dirty toward the peak of the jam. Dirty is not how I would describe most Reba’s, you know what I mean?

Then the Mike’s grabbed my attention. A short 9-minute version that has Trey playing with his pedals quite a bit. I don’t remember too many earlier instances before this where Trey really went to town on looping within a jam like this. I mean, there was the digital delay loop jam in Ice the night before this, but that sort of stands on its own. This is really within the context of the Mike’s jam. Interesting… then there is no second jam in this Mike’s. Traditional transition to H2, instead. Great Mike’s though!! May go back and listen to this one later.

And, of course, how can miss the Little Drummer Boy jams peppered through this 2nd set, most impressively in the ‘paug… which, by the way, contains a really interesting breakdown and DEG segment and closes out with a great little vocal jam. A unique ‘paug, for sure. I’d say this whole Mike’s Groove is a keeper. Wow! How have I never heard this before?

Beautiful Tela then Slave… shit, I should really be working but this just sounds soooooo good. Page’s Rhodes at the beginning of this jam is just gorgeous, and very different from the previous Slave up in Portland (12/30/93). Thank goodness they brought Slave out of retirement!!

What a great show. I’m still really early in this process, but I have a feeling I’m going to find gems like this at every turn. I really don’t believe I’ve never heard this show before. This second set is amazing!

Thanks for reading.

Soundcheck: Funkisupa Policeman

Set 1: Magilla, Wilson > Rift, Bathtub Gin > Nellie Kane > Julius, Fee -> All Things Reconsidered, Stash, The Squirming Coil

Set 2: Sample in a Jar, Reba, Peaches en Regalia > Big Ball Jam, Demand > Mike’s Song > I Am Hydrogen > Weekapaug Groove, Tela > Slave to the Traffic Light, Cavern

Encore: Amazing Grace, Highway to Hell

Notes: This show marked the debut of Demand. Weekapaug included Little Drummer Boy, Divided Sky, and DEG teases as well as a vocal jam. Little Drummer Boy was also teased during the end of Peaches and the ensuing Big Ball Jam, which also contained Demand teases from Fish. Highway to Hell was jokingly dedicated to some fans in the front row, who were chanting for AC/DC Bag, and not an AC/DC song.
